The Cedar Hill High School Longhorns are used to success in sports. Now they’ve added rapid construction of canned and boxed food structures to their list of athletic skills.

Cedar Hill football coach Joey McGuire and his four-man team of players and assistant coaches outpaced five other high school teams to win the Speed to Feed CANstruction contest, sponsored by Texas Trust Credit Union.

The all-in-fun contest, designed to encourage donations to the North Texas Food Bank, consisted of five teams (Cedar Hill, Mansfield Tigers, Desoto Fighting Eagles, Duncanville Panthers, and South Grand Prairie Warriors) all trying to build a structure out of random canned and boxed food items. The rules: build a structure seven feet tall that could stand on its own for 30 seconds without falling, and do it faster than anyone else, and you were the winner.

Cedar Hill accomplished that, to the cheers of an enthusiastic crowd. In addition to the trophy, the Longhorns won a $250 prize for their team. But the big winner for the day was the North Texas Food Bank, which received a check from Texas Trust for $30,000, in addition to more than 7,000 pounds of food that was collected in a pre-CANstruction food drive.

The Speed to Feed event was held at Texas Trust's Cedar Hill branch. Before the CANstruction contest, cheer and dance teams performed, there were free hot dogs and drinks for everyone, and children could choose from a variety of fun activities.
